Organizations – November 2023

The National Steering Committee (NSC) for the Concrete Industry Management program has appointed three new officers: Chairman Karl Watson, Jr., Baker Construction Enterprises chief executive officer; Vice Chairman Steven Cox, Command Alkon vice president – Customer Success; and, Secretary/Treasurer Nicole Maher, National Ready Mixed Concrete Association chief operating officer.

Joining them on the NSC Board are newly appointed directors Maschmeyer Concrete Company of Florida President Steven Bishop, Irving Materials Inc. Vice President of QC/QA Heather Brown, Sika Corp. Director of Learning and Development Paula Dunn, and Graycor Vice President, Corporate Development Brian Gallagher.

“For more than 25 years, the leadership of the concrete industry has embraced and supported the NSC mission of ‘advancing the concrete industry by degrees,’” says CIM Executive Director Rex Cottle. “Many major companies in the concrete industry, along with most national concrete associations and foundations, have pledged their time, talent and treasures to CIM through their involvement in the NSC. Those industry leaders who serve on our board of directors are a testament to their commitment to the continued success of CIM.”

The NSC supports CIM degree programs at Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro; New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark; South Dakota State University, Brookings; Texas State University, San Marcos; and, California State University, Chico.

ASTM International Committee C16 on Thermal Insulation is accepting abstracts of papers for Symposium on the Changing Face of Building Materials and Systems in Response to Climate Change, October 9-10, 2024 in Orlando, Fla. Organizers envision a forum exploring the impacts of climate change on building specification, coupled with discussion and collaborations surrounding codes and standards. Paper or presentation topic candidates include:

  • Climate-resilient buildings and thermal insulations matching the extremes of temperature, fire, drought, wind, rain and flood;
  • Embodied carbon;
  • New or modified thermal insulations and related building products/materials;
  • Theoretical developments in materials and systems design;
  • Advances in testing and evaluation, laboratory and field;
  • Codes, standards and economics related to buildings; and,
  • Simulations and modeling of building performance.

Additional information on the program can be obtained from C16 Technical Chairs Phalguni Mukhopadhyaya, [email protected], and David Yarbrough, [email protected], or at the symposium portal, https://go.astm.org/building-materials-systems-and-climate-change.Separately, ASTM Committee C13 on Concrete Pipe has presented its top annual honor, Award of Merit, and accompanying title of Fellow to Rinker Materials Director of Engineering Corey Haeder for distinguished service and outstanding ASTM International committee participation. C13 members especially recognize his technical knowledge, diligence in navigating disputes, and foundational contributions to many concrete pipe standards. An ASTM member since 2003, Haeder was honored in 201 with Committee C13’s Merlin F. ‘IB’ Spangler Award. A South Dakota School of Mines and Technology graduate with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering, he has 25-plus years in concrete pipe.
